Yesterday was my first day at the San Diego Comic-Con, having skipped Wednesday's Preview Night to attend the San Diego Noir library event and have dinner with friends. We reached the con floor shortly after it opened at 9:30, and immediately ran into the great artist Francesco Francavilla (who did the art on my miniseries Garrison, and whose star is shooting up higher and faster than most) and his lovely wife Lisa.
Inside, we made our way to the Mysterious Galaxy booth #1119, with only a few stops along the way. We're in the area where most of the book publishers are gathered (Penguin beside us, Hachette/Grand Central across, Simon & Schuster kitty-corner (where they have an advance copy of my teen horror classic Dark Vengeance on display, as well as CSI: Burn Season).
At noon I did a signing at Mysterious Galaxy, and met lots of readers as well as having a chance to chat with old friends Maggie Thompson of Comics Buyer's Guide and Sharon and Ryan Liebowitz of Golden Apple Comics in L.A. Maggie snapped this pic of me showing off my wares. In addition to being an influential publisher, she's a long-time fan and an old friend of my friends Dick and Pat Lupoff, who are also here somewhere.
There were various meetings, and I got to watch David moderate his first-ever Comic-Con panel (but not his last), and more meetings. I got to hang out with Tom Lennon and Ben Garant (Reno 911, etc.) for a while--the nicest filthy rich gentlemen you would ever want to meet, and always happy to interact with every last fan.
Today? More of the same, including a panel on crime fiction at 12:30 (Room 8) and a signing after (Autograph Area, table AA8).
